Teaching & Projects

Research projects for BSc and MSc students

We welcome inquiries from interested BSc and MSc students (from the RUG) about possible research projects in the Van der Wel group. Prof. Van der Wel is a formal examiner for the following (MSc) programs, for the purposes of individual research projects:

For other programs, it may be possible to arrange a project as well. We have previously hosted MSc student research projects from the BCN MSc, MMIT MSc programs. We have also hosted projects for diverse BSc programs (BSc Physics, BSc Biology, University College Groningen (UCG)). If you are interested in exploring a possible project, contact Prof Van der Wel and explore our website for suitable topics.

Courses – coordination and lecturing

Prof. Van der Wel is active in course coordination and lecturing in several BSc and MSc programs. A selection of relevant courses is listed below, along with the associated program:

  • Imaging (for LS&T BSc; coordinator)
    • Program: BSc Life Science & Technology (Chem cluster)
    • This course covers techniques used in life science research, focusing especially on applications in structural biology, microscopy (EM and optical), and medical imaging (brief introduction).
  • Biological Physics (for BME BSc; coordinator)
    • Program: BSc Biomedical Engineering
    • This course covers different topics in biological physics, ranging from some molecular biophysics (ion channels), to muscle function, prosthetics, vision, and other topics.
  • Surface Characterization (for BME BSc; lecturer)
    • Program: BSc Biomedical Engineering
    • This course covers analytical (chemistry) techniques applicable to surface characterization. I give lectures on the topic of NMR spectroscopy, for chemical analysis and surface-selective studies.
  • Medical Structural Biology (BSc; lecturer)
    • Course code: WBBY007-05
    • Lectures on the use of NMR spectroscopy to study protein structures.
  • Drugs for the central nervous system (BSc; lecturer)
    • Course code: WBFA033-05
    • Lecture on Huntington’s disease.
  • Biomedical Sciences: Professional Perspectives (MSc BMS; lecturer)
    • Course code: WMBM022-05
  • Skills for Biology (MSc Biology; lecturer)
